Uncle Drew’s Book Club Has Arrived

Book Club

I was once told if there’s nothing that mirrors your vision, create it. I give to you Uncle Drew’s Book Club.

I’ve been an avid reader since landing in my mid 20’s due to the nudging and inspiration of others. With that love for reading, I now want to share and create a space where others can come to grow as readers and humans.

Completed my reading goal for 2024 of 20 books

On Monday January 27th and through 2025, Uncle Drew’s Book Club will virtually serve as this space for fellow readers.

We will discuss in full the book James by Percival Everett with a newly acquainted friend of mine, Keitravis. This book is an adaptation of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s (James) perspective. It will bring forth some great discussion for those that join.

Throughout the year, we will tackle one book per month on our way to completing 12 books in the year. The books will vary from fiction to nonfiction, as well as women and men authors. In order to broaden your scope, one needs to work on being uncomfortably comfortable.

I was never a reader growing up.

I spent the early years of my life completing the mandatory reads from elementary and middle school. They didn’t excite me. They more so felt like reads to complete in order to check a box. I started reading Harry Potter as a hobby and made it through one or two books. The words themselves should’ve ran me away but I fought through and surprised myself. Creating this mythical place in my mind.

I went through high school and college doing the reading I was assigned with maybe a book here and there that I opened out of my own self interest. It wasn’t until college graduation was around the corner and I asked myself an important question…

“How would I learn moving forward?”

The answer to this was simple, I had to take my learning into my own hands. I bought a kindle as a birthday present to myself on my 22nd birthday and vowed to read books that would assist in my maturation and development.

The books were often of athletes and notable people (imagine that) but I began to see the overarching similarities of those who reached great heights in their profession. There was an insatiable appetite to be the best while ingesting knowledge and words from others who had done it before. They opened books and read. Often. Most reading upwards of 30-40 books a year.

Whether these books were strictly for their craft or for pleasure. The point is, they read.

I have no doubt in my mind that my book club will call into question your pursuit of reading. The material you read. The authors you enjoy. Putting what we read into action on a consistent basis. The ultimate quest of bettering yourself.

That’s what this book club is meant to do. To bring people together from different walks of life, to enjoy time together, even if just for a few hours a month.

Read with an open mind. Develop your own perspective and create your own opinion.
